Portland detective, wounded and missing
Mid-30s, sallow, lean, and solemn, but capable of a dry humor when motivated. Seems willing to believe in the possibility of the mighty strange, if not necessarily the supernatural. While initially quite keen on figuring out the trio’s role in the murders around town, Butler drifted to the view that they were targets, not suspects. After the clues led him to believe the murders had something to do with bootleggers hiding in tunnels near the Sellwood bridge construction site, he led several officers to their death when the creatures that lived (“lived”? Live?) beneath the Riverview Cemetery swarmed them. In their retreat the officers tripped a dynamite trap, bringing the tunnels down on themselves… and, one hopes, their attackers. Brought up the connection with the Argent Group, sending the trio out to Forest Grove to speak to Simon Gatineau. While they were gone he slipped into a coma and was moved to the Oregon State Hospital down in Salem for more specialized care, minus his right leg.
