Popular Spiritualist Investigator Turned Corpse
According to himself, he was (is?) the “King of Occultists”. Author of several accounts of encounters and conflicts with spiritual forces, Hiram moved into the Martensen House in order to uncover the mystery held therein. Or, more likely, to make up a ripping yarn that will sell well.
Strangely, Hiram Crewe declares there is no supernatural force in the house after a month’s stay. He moves out several months after that, moves to New York City and goes into semi-seclusion and full retirement. After only a handful of appearances in 1905 he disappears completely and is declared a Missing Person in 1906, then officially declared dead in 1916.
